Opening your dishwasher and finding dirty dishes after a full cycle can be frustrating. Fortunately, many cleaning problems are caused by simple maintenance issues that you can fix yourself. Follow these seven tips to improve your dishwasher’s cleaning performance before scheduling a repair.
1. Clean the Dishwasher Filter
A dirty filter is one of the most common reasons dishes come out with food particles still attached. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub that should be cleaned regularly.
Tip: Remove the filter, rinse it under warm running water, and gently scrub away any debris with a soft brush. Cleaning it once a month helps maintain strong water circulation.
2. Inspect the Spray Arms
The spray arms distribute water throughout the dishwasher. If the small holes become clogged with food particles or mineral deposits, water can’t reach every dish.
Tip: Remove the spray arms if your model allows it, clear blocked holes with a toothpick, and rinse thoroughly. If you notice mineral buildup, soak the spray arms in white vinegar before reinstalling them.
3. Make Sure the Water Is Hot
Dishwasher detergent works best with hot water. If the dishwasher fills with cold water, grease and food residue may remain on your dishes.
Tip: Run your kitchen faucet until the water is hot before starting a cycle. Your water heater should be set to approximately 120°F (49°C) for the best cleaning results.
4. Use Fresh Dishwasher Detergent
Old detergent loses its cleaning power over time. Using the wrong amount or type of detergent can also affect performance.
Tip: Choose a high-quality detergent and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you have hard water, adding a rinse aid can help reduce spots and improve drying.
5. Clean the Inside of Your Dishwasher
Grease, soap residue, and food buildup can reduce cleaning performance and create unpleasant odors.
Tip: Once a month, run an empty hot cycle using a dishwasher cleaner or place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack during a hot wash cycle to help remove buildup.
6. Check the Water Inlet Valve
If your dishwasher isn’t filling with enough water, it won’t be able to wash dishes effectively. A worn or clogged water inlet valve is often the cause.
Tip: If you notice very little water entering the dishwasher or hear unusual noises during the fill cycle, the inlet valve may need professional inspection or replacement.
Bonus Tip
There’s no need to completely pre-rinse your dishes. Simply scrape off large food scraps before loading. Modern dishwashers and detergents are designed to clean lightly soiled dishes, and a small amount of food residue actually helps the detergent work more effectively.
